ROLE OF YOUTH IN INDIAN POLITICS
ROLE OF YOUTH IN INDIAN POLITICS

(% Of Youth In Parliament)
The country desperately needs some young leaders who are energetic, enthusiastic, morally sound and diligent. There is no doubt that our country has progressed a great deal since the time of independence, but I’m sure our development would have proceeded much faster if we had had some young torchbearers to light the way.
There can be two reasons for this deplorable state of Indian politics. One may be that the youth today are not interested in actively participating in the political field. The youth of modern India are aware of the problems facing our country and the world at large. Given a chance they would be willing to change the political condition of the country for the better. The second reason may be that young people are not given opportunities to prove themselves with the excuse that they are not sufficiently experienced to participate actively in the governance of the country. Almost all the major political parties seem to be functioning under the monopoly of old leaders. Old people should realize that they must make way for younger people to take control of the activities.
There are a few things, which need to be clarified. Firstly, by ‘youngsters’, I do not mean people who are 20 years old with no political experience at all. Youth in this context is meant to refer to people in their 30’s or early 40’s who have a good mix of energy and experience. Secondly, I do not intend to mean that old people should leave the political scene and rest. Of course they should be available for guidance. There should be a retirement age for politicians as well which may be around 65 years. There should also be some educational qualification requisite for politicians.
Why Youth Not Participate In Politics?
More than 50% of India’s population is below the age of 25, and more than 65% below 35. So going by statistics, India’s youth can play a fundamental role in shaping and running the biggest democracy in the world. Yet, as per a recent report, only 6% of the leaders and ministers in the government of India are below the age of 35. This is really shocking and implies that in spite of the availability of talent, enthusiasm, knowledge and resources, the youth of this country are not interested in jumping onto the bandwagon, be a part of the politics in India and contribute in the workings of the country. Where we have numerous young and extremely successful entrepreneurs who are earning huge money, we don’t have an equal number of young political leaders who can run the country. We also have a majority of the population which just wants to criticise but when asked to change the situations themselves, they are completely reluctant to co-operate.

REASONS THAT YOUTH DON'T PARTICIPATE IN POLITICS
1. Money/System
Yes off course!! money...The point is we don't want just youth we wan't talented honest youth in politics(rare breed),talent needs something to eat and drink. The current system to join politics is very messy and require's a lot of patience for someone to go up from bottom.
Since there is no retirement age for politics you can go on and on,making it difficult for a youth to step in, in fact the average age of a cabinet minister is as low as 65.
Back in 2002 a bill was supposed to be passed which could have possibly barred MP\MLA with criminal record's to fight election's , to my knowledge 90% of parliament stood strong to take it down.
2.How to join?
With no written exam or qualification required, the only way to join is through what we can say is a*** licking provided you don't have:-
- Political background of family.
- Your are from a big business family.
- You have a great criminal record with at least two FIR .
- Or in rare case you have achieved too much in your life and they cannot ignore you.
